We recently shared an overview for three areas that are important to focus on so that you can leave your work feeling satisfied and ready to tackle your next chapter. Those three areas are your team, your priorities, and your health.

Last week, we covered your team, today, we’re taking a look into your priorities, and next week, we’ll talk about your health.

It can be overwhelming to think about
all you need to do before you leave!

In order to consider what would be possible,
it’s important to identify your work priorities.

If you’re unsure of what your work priorities are, consider using a framework similar to the Urgent vs Important one, like we describe below.

Carve out some time to consider your big rocks (i.e. the most important priorities), work that needs to be handed off, and/or work that no longer needs to happen.

  • What is urgent AND important for your team’s success? These are the big rocks to focus on now.
  • What is either important but not urgent, or urgent but not important? These things should be delegated with as much information and schedule details as possible.
  • What is not urgent and not important? These are the things to delete from your list.

Depending on your role and organization, you may want to do this exercise with your manager, colleagues, and/or employees. If it makes sense to determine your priorities on your own, be sure to communicate with the appropriate people, once you’ve crafted your plan.

Once you have your plan, consider how you might use the PAUSE throughout your days/weeks/months, to remind yourself of your top priorities.

  • Setup regular PAUSE check-ins with the appropriate people (your manager, colleagues, and/or employees), to keep them updated on the work you’re completing, the work you’ll start but need to hand-off later, and the work you need to delegate now.
  • PAUSE each morning to remind yourself of your top priorities for the day. How will you handle obstacles that may get in your way?
  • PAUSE mid-day to check in with yourself. How are you doing with focusing on your priorities?
  • PAUSE at the end of the day to reflect. How did you do with focusing on your priorities?

Before diving in and working on everything,
we encourage you to PAUSE.

Take time to identify your top priorities
and then share your plan.

Just as importantly,
PAUSE regularly to be sure you’re on track.

After looking over some of the ideas we shared, think about what setting yourself up for success would look like for you.

Stay tuned next week, when we’ll talk about the importance of focusing on your health and wellness, as you’re leaving.
